At the heart if this wonderful children's book lies a deep love for the Maui community and the beautiful Hawaiian islands. Shauvon, Author and Tioni, Illustrator, came together with a shared passion to create something truly special that would serve as a tribute and keepsake for this incredible island they call home. With the goal in mind to help preserve for children and families the legacy of Lāhainā’s rich history and beauty for generations to come. It has been a labor of love, pouring their hearts into each page to reflect Lāhainā's beauty, culture, and rich history.
With Lāhainā being very close to both of their hearts, they wanted to create this children’s book to uplift their community in remembrance of Lāhainā after the devastating Maui wildfires of 2023.
Their vision was to create a children's book that would immerse their readers in the delightful journey through charming Lāhainā town, as if time stood still and the magic of the story would carry on.
They aspired to create something special that could be cherished by children all over the world, so that they can always view beautiful Lāhainā in the illustrations, taking families through different real historical locations that unfortunately are no longer there due to the fires but now they can view every time they open the book, while showcasing the Hawaiian culture, and to imbue readers with the aloha spirit as they learn about the importance of friendship, community, and treasuring special moments.
They invite you to join in this journey together as you flip through the beautiful pages of this book and feel the love, warmth, and deep connection to Lāhainā and the Maui community, while enjoying this keepsake that will be cherished for generations to come.
Where the magic of collaboration meets the beauty of Maui and the spirit of aloha. Tioni, a talented artist who was born and raised on Maui and Shauvon a writer who also calls Maui home, both crossed paths within the welcoming embrase of a local social club, Aloha Ladies Social Club. What began as a simple introduction quickly turned into a blossoming friendship where they discovered a shared love for creativity and a desire to make a positive impact. Through their shared passion and both being mothers, Shauvon and Tioni decided to collaborate and create this wonderful children's book, which will now be a continuing series, to not only carry on the memory of Lāhainā but also to help spark imagination in our keiki, share the Hawaiian culture, educate, and warm the hearts of all their readers.
Shauvon Young is a passionate writer with a deep love for children’s books. As a devoted mother, she understands the importance of storytelling in a child’s development. With a life immersed on Maui, she has created a profound connection to the community and culture.
Shauvon embarked on her journey as a children’s book author to share heartwarming stories that seamlessly combine imagination and education, transporting readers to imaginary worlds while keeping the locations in her stories real so that readers can learn about valuable history and culture while delighting in the joy of reading. She aims to captivate both children and adults alike.
After studying journalism at Sacramento State University, Shauvon honed her writing skills through various mediums, bringing stories to life for readers of all ages. She has always loved to write and tell stories, her favorite by far being children’s stories.
Shauvon also supports the Maui community and nonprofits through various methods within her continued philanthropist efforts and since founding Aloha Ladies Social Club. She finds joy in spending beach time with her family and dancing hula with her hālau.
Through her writing, Shauvon aims to foster a love for literature in children, hoping to inspire young readers, ignite their imaginations while learning about history and culture, and empower them to dream BIG!
Tioni Acain is an artist hailing from the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii. Her passion lies in acrylic paintings that capture the wonders of this paradise she calls home. Drawing inspiration from the landscapes and creatures around her, she aims to showcase their beauty through her unique perspective.
With each stroke of paint on canvas, Tioni creates a symphony of colors that evoke a sense of natural movement. Look closely at each piece and you'll discover a hidden heart, symbolizing her deep love for art.
She owes much gratitude to Janet Sato for nurturing her artistic talent during high school. Alongside talented artists like Kirk Kurokawa and Philip Sabado, she contributed to a cultural mural showcased at the Ritz-Carlton Maui.
In 2019, amidst a successful corporate career as an area manager, Tioni won the prestigious 31st Lāhainā Art Society annual poster contest with her acrylic masterpiece “West Maui Lāhainā.” It became a limited edition 2020 poster cherished by art enthusiasts everywhere.
While she excelled in developing future leaders in business, creating art has remained her true calling.
"My kids loved following the adventure of chasing the “Magical Hawaiian Rainbow” and I know your kids will too! We found ourselves diving back in the book to find the hearts hidden on each page. This magical book is thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated! Following the adventure of Keona & Leilani also brought back wonderful memories of our visits to Lahaina. The author does a beautiful job transporting you back to the magic and beauty of this paradise. This book is a perfect time capsule and keepsake for those that love Lahaina but also captures the very best parts for those that never had a chance to visit. I even grabbed a few more copies for gifts because I loved it so much! 10/10 recommend!"
